This guide was developed to introduce natural surface trail design. It is intended to help prepare volunteers and professionals to perform trail design by familiarizing trainees with fundamental procedures and techniques for natural surface trail planning, site analysis, trail design and layout, and trail design implementation.
Trail design is a multi-disciplinary skill and art that typically requires significant experience to reach proficiency in a variety of environments, locations, and trail user groups. This course only covers the basics of natural surface trail design and therefore participants are encouraged to seek further field experience and training as well as to mentor with an experienced Trail Designer.
